Student Chapter of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics at Purdue is proud to announce the ‘The Computational Students Seminars Series‘. The seminar series begins with a talk titled ’The probability that a random polynomial with integer coefficients has all real roots‘ by Lirong Yuan, Junior Student, who is a Major in Math and Computer Science at Purdue University. It will be followed by a talk titled ‘Comparing Contemporary Atmospheric Dispersion Models in Evaluating Downwind Ionizing Concentrations in Cases of Accidental Release from a Hypothetical Nuclear Reactor‘ by M. Nacar, M.Sc. Eng. Student in Civil Engineering (Environmental emphasis) at Purdue University. Both these talks will be on Thursday, November 8th 2012 at 3:00pm in POTR B050. Refreshments will be provided.
At the Student Chapters meeting with SIAM Leadership at AN12, chapter representatives had some very good suggestions about how SIAM could better serve its chapters and its many student members. Attendees agreed that the opportunity to network with other chapter representatives at AN12 was really great and that it would be wonderful if that opportunity to network could be expanded throughout the year. Another suggestion was that it would be beneficial if chapters who already organized local or regional conferences could share their knowledge about the best way to run a conference with other chapters who hadn’t yet organized a meeting.
SIAM’s Public Awareness officer Karthika Murthraswamy, who attended AN12, talked with a number of the students after the breakfast meeting and they agreed that a blog would be a great way for the chapters to stay in touch throughout the year. Also, after the breakfast meeting, five representatives from chapters who have run very successful conferences at their own institutions got together and decided to work on a document on how to organize a student conference.
As a result, Karthika set up a SIAM Student blog and the five students Federico Antico (Purdue University, USA), Ingrid Von Glehn (The University of Oxford, United Kingdom), Burak Gozluklu (Middle Eastern Technical University, Turkey), Marc Kjerland (University of Illinois at Chicago, USA), and Barrett Leslie (Illinois Institute Of Technology, USA) developed “The SIAM Student Conference White Papers” which you can read about on the new Student Blog.

Soon I’ll be sending out instructions on how you can make your own contributions to the SIAMStudent Blog.
The Purdue SIAM Student Chapter is planning on holding a “student seminar” for those of you who are interested in presenting their research prior to giving their talk in a more official setting (such as in oral qualifier, prelim, defense, and seminars). We would first like to census on how many volunteers would be interested in the event prior to announcing its date. Please do reply by Oct 5th and we shall send you further updates.
SIAM@Purdue is honored to co-sponsoring the Model-based analysis and control of cellular processes’ workshop next October 8-9, 2012 at Purdue University. This NSF-sponsored workshop will explore emerging methods that use semi-mechanistic models to improve our understanding and control of cellular processes. Check the program in the following link.
We are pleased to announce the new officers for SIAM@Purdue.
We wish to thank our outgoing officers for such an excellent work during the last year.
It is time for us all to gather to review what SIAM is, what we want it to do for us, and who will help out this year. It is time for our annual SIAM callouts and elections. Please come out and drag your friends.
When: Wednesday, September 5th @ 4:30pm
Where: LWSN 3102
Free: Jimmy John’s sandwiches, and drinks!
Meet your peers and talk about what you would like to see from SIAM this year.
Congratulations to the our conference Winners

Purdue University is proud to host the 4th Annual Computational Science and Engineering Student Conference (CSESC). April 6th will be this year’s date for SIAM@Purdue’s annual Computational Science and Engineering Student Conference.
We invite both graduate and undergraduate researchers from all Universities to participate. CSESC is a great opportunity for networking with other students who perform research in interdisciplinary areas involving computational research.
The best paper and the best poster presented will be awarded by the committee.
Please check the CSESC 2012 page for more information.
