Thank you to everyone

April 8th, 2010

We want to thank all the students who made CSESC 2010 a success. The posters were interesting and the talks educational. We had students from departments across the university sharing and discussing their work. Thank you to our judges, volunteers, participants, and attendees.

For those interested here are two links to photos from the conference:

For those who want a copy of the program, here is the PDF.

Registration is now closed. If you applied, you have been accepted. We have over 50 student participating in this year’s conference and 13 science and engineering department represented. The speaker schedule is now listed as a part of the conference schedule.

We will see you tomorrow on the 1st. Enjoy!

Due to the last minute approval of the conference prizes we have decided to extend the registration deadlines a couple more days.  There will be $100 prize for the best poster.  Another $100 raffle prize for those who give a talk.  And finally a $50 prize to the student with the best science and engineering related art entry.  Attendees and participants also get dinner at Boiler Market after the conference.

So get your registration in by Monday, March 29th and be a part of the second annual Computational Science and Engineering Student Conference.  All departments are welcome.  Graduate and undergraduates are both welcome.

We’ve been asked by several student to extend the registration deadline for the second annual Computational Science and Engineering Student Conference. You’ve asked and we’ve listened. The deadline is now Friday, March 26th. That is this Friday! Don’t put it off, sign up now. Just click to the left where it says conference registration. There will be cool posters, art, talks, dinner, and prizes. Don’t miss out!

CSE/CLS & SIAM hosted talk

March 22nd, 2010

Title: Computational Hemodynamics: Congenital and Acquired Heart Disease

Speaker: Steven Frankel

Date & Location: 4:00pm 3/24/2010  Lily Hall 3118

Abstract:
Cardiovascular disease is the single leading cause of death in America today. Estimates from the AHA for the year 2006 are that 81,100,000 people in the United States have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease (CVD). In addition, and no less important, thousands of infants born each year have congenital cardiovascular defects. Advances in mathematical models, numerical methods, medical imaging, and computational power have increased the role of computational hemodynamics in increasing insight into complex biofluid flows and aiding in the design and testing of medical devices.

That’s right, we’re at it again.  It is 2010 and it is time for a new and improved student conference.  Mark April 1 on your calendar, for that afternoon will be this years interdisciplinary student research showcase.  Grab anyone you know using computational methods in their research and get them to talk, submit a poster, or even their science or engineering related artwork.

We’ll be posting the flyer and details shortly.  Sign up will open up soon!

In addition,  our chapter has been invited to participate in Student Days on
Tuesday, July 13 and Wednesday, July 14 as part of the 2010 SIAM Annual Meeting
in Pittsburgh on July 12-16, 2010. One student of our chapter can present a
paper. We will cover your travel expenses!!

Everyone who has already published a paper or is in the process of publishing
one and who wants to get this invited paper on their resume. They should send an
email with the paper to Jyoti Mathur (mathurj at purdue edu) before 15th of
February. We will accept PhD. students first but Master students papers are also
welcome.

Spring Callout

February 5th, 2010

Welcome back students!

Come get free pizza and find out about SIAM@Purdue and what we plan for this
semester.

We’ll be meeting in 1106 Lawson (LWSN) on Fri. Feb 12 from 6-7:30.

For all you newcomers, stop by and find out what SIAM@Purdue is all about.
We’ll briefly go over what SIAM can do for you, get ideas of what we would like
to do this semester. Find out what others are doing.

If you know of any friends who are doing any modeling, simulation, or
other applied mathematics in any department, let them know.  We are open
to students (grad and undergrad) from all departments.

Send them the attached poster to put up on their office door.  Put it up on your
office door.  Announce this at the beginnings of any numerical class you
may have.  The more people the merrier.  As an organization we are all
about networking with other folks using applied mathematics.   Pass the
word along! Friends are also welcome.
